A Late November GBBD

I know I'm very late for this month's Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, but I do have a good excuse.  We've been away, visiting Daughter and Son-in-law in Texas, and by the time we got back home, this is what was left of any blooms I might have had before:

It was a very chilly 12 degrees when we arrived home late Tuesday night; not even the pansies like it this cold!

We had a beautiful fall that lasted longer than usual, with the first killing frost not arriving until October 30.  But winter has definitely arrived early this year.  Late last week the temperatures dipped well below the November normal, and the snow and wind blew.  Thankfully, though, we had only a dusting of snow, not the avalanche of snow that fell on the Northeast.

It seems there were very few places in the U.S. that escaped the polar vortex this past week.  Even in Dallas--no sitting by the pool on this trip, and no excursions to the Dallas Arboretum this time.  But we had a good visit nonetheless, and since Daughter and Son-in-law are expecting their first child in early January, I know there will be many more trips to Texas coming up soon.

With the holidays coming up, I am actually glad that garden work is done for the year.  And once they are over, I know that I will be soon be spending cold winter nights planning once again for that elusive "perfect" garden.

Thanks to our hostess Carol for sponsoring Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day every month.  And since I know I won't be posting for at least another week, I want to wish you all . . .

A Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. The weather is very similar here. Snow arrived on Sunday and it seems to want to stay on the ground. I am glad you enjoyed your trip. Won't it be nice to visit again this winter to see the new baby. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

  2. Brrr! An early winter is rarely welcome. We got more rain than snow in Maine but it's been chilly. Congrats on the upcoming grandchild! It's nice to have that to look forward to.

  4. I like your new header photo! What an exciting time for you and your family, Rose! Regarding the weather, I keep thinking we really lucked out this time. Even though it was cold, we only have a slight touch of snow, which helps to make the landscape look more interesting. Happy Thanksgiving, Rose!

  7. So happy for you and your family, Rose. Thanks for stopping by to say hi. I've missed posting and visiting. Our new yard is already posing some interesting problems, but I'm looking forward to tackling them in the spring. Winter-time here (in Illinois) is perfect for planning, though it's going to be a long ol' time until perfection is achieved in my garden:)

Wishing you many more blessings for Thanksgiving!

  8. We had a lovely fall too-but it sure seemed like it ended early. Deciduous trees still have leaves on them! Really weird. You enjoy your winter and holidays. Spring will be here before we know it!

  10. 12?! We had a low in the upper teens but we got off relatively easy.

It seems much of the country had a really nice long fall with an early arrival of winter. Sounds contradictory but that's how it was! lol

  11. Rose girl ... first of all I absolutely love your header picture! it is stunning .. I never get to the stage with my beauty bush that it berries out like that and I don't have an amsonia .. I may have to rectify that after seeing your gorgeous one.
Yes ! ... in search of the elusive perfect garden, individual to each of us .. more importantly (groan) I have to get in better shape to be able to enjoy my garden .. so another in search of the "better garden body" ? LOL ... fingers crossed we can all attain that and have a great 2015 garden year : )

  12. Oh, your first photo is sad. I always feel for the plants when nature takes them as the weather turns. Like you, I too look forward to the resting period, for me and the garden plants. All of us need to be cozy for the next few months. Happy Thanksgiving Rose.

  13. Rose, what wonderful news. Congratulations.....such a joy for you all. Hope daughter is well.

Brrrrr......please do not send the snow our way :)
Saw images on BBC news, so much snow in one day. It is a bit frightening this extreme weather that we get now.

  14. Oh, Rose how sadly to see frozen flowers...
We have no snow here in North, but the weather is wet and windy, only +5C. Therefore I did not write on this GBBD, nothing blooming in my garden.
    A Happy Thanksgiving!

  15. You know the garden season is over when the pansies call it quits. Sorry to hear you didn't get to visit the Dallas gardens but what wonderful news for you. I'm not quite ready for snow but glad the garden season is over. I appreciate the winter break to, as you say, 'plan that elusive perfect garden'.

  22. Thanks, all, for stopping by to visit! I have been behind in visiting blogs as I have been busy with Christmas preparations and shopping and especially with working on a baby quilt that I hope to finish before the new grandbaby arrives. My garden is definitely in hibernation mode now.
